Single conductor wire design is defined by American Wire Gauge (AWG), conductor material, and stranding construction. Proper selection ensures the required balance of electrical performance, flexibility, durability, and manufacturability.

Available AWG Sizes

Gavitt single conductor constructions are commonly available in:

  • 32 AWG through 10 AWG
  • Additional sizes may be available by request

AWG selection influences current capacity, flexibility, overall diameter, and mechanical strength.

Conductor Materials

A range of conductor materials is available to meet electrical and mechanical requirements.

  • Soft Bare Copper (ASTM B3): Excellent conductivity and flexibility
  • Soft Tinned Copper (ASTM B33): Improved corrosion resistance and solderability
  • Copper Alloy Conductors: Increased fatigue resistance and tensile strength
  • Bonded Conductors: Enhanced strand stability and improved flex life
  • Tinsel Conductors: Maximum flexibility and fatigue life for extreme motion, low-current applications

Stranding Configurations

Stranding geometry influences mechanical behavior and fatigue life.

  • Bunched stranding
  • Concentric stranding (semi, true, unilay, equilay)
  • Rope lay constructions

Higher strand counts generally improve flexibility and fatigue resistance.

Insulation Options

Single conductors may be insulated with materials selected for performance and compliance.

  • PVC, TPR, polyurethane
  • Fluoropolymers such as FEP
  • Wide range of colors and durometers
  • UL and CSA listings available on selected constructions

Design Considerations

AWG size, material selection, and stranding type should be evaluated together based on electrical load, motion requirements, environment, and service life expectations. Gavitt works with customers to identify the most appropriate single conductor construction for each application.
